Chief Agbani Darego is a Nigerian model and beauty queen.

She was crowned Miss World in the year 2001 and became the first ever indigenous African to win Miss World.

Talking about her early life, Darego was born in Lagos State, Nigeria and was the sixth of eight children.

She attended Bereton Montessori Nursery and Primary School and was sent to the boarding school when she was ten.

Her mother, Inaewo had a boutique and rice trading business and was suffering from breast cancer. She eventually died two years after Darego moved into the boarding house.

Darego longed to be a model as a teenager, and auditioned for the M-Net Face of Africa modelling competition despite her conservative father's wishes.

She attended Federal Government Girls' College, Abuloma and moved to the University of Port Harcourt for a degree in Computer Science and Mathematics.

In the year 2001, she was crowned Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria and a few months later was contesting for Miss Universe.

A few months later she was a contestant at Miss Universe, and became the first Nigerian to place among the top 10 semi-finalists, finishing seventh overall. Darego was the only contestant to wear a modest maillot as opposed to a revealing bikini during the swimsuit competition.

She was awarded an honorary chieftaincy by the Council of Chiefs of Lagos, making her the youngest chief at that time.
