Ahmad Lawan Biography and Early Life

Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan was born on the 12th of January, 1959 in Gashua. He had his primary education at Sabon Gari Primary School, Gashua (1974) and secondary school at Government Secondary School, Gashua (1979).

After his secondary education, Lawan enrolled at the prestigious University of Maiduguri, graduating with a bachelor's degree in Geography in 1984.

Career and Politics

Between 1985 to 1896, Ahmad Lawan worked in the Yobe State Civil Service as an Education Officer in the state Ministry of Education. He thereafter proceeded to the University of Maiduguri where he lectured between 1987 and 1997.

In 1999, Lawan got elected as a member representing Bade/Jakusko constituency in the federal House of Representatives. At different times, he chaired the House Committees on education and agriculture.

In 2007, he got elected to the Senate (representing Yobe North Senatorial District). In 2009, as chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, Lawan initiated and sponsored the Desertification Control Commission Bill.

April 9, 2011, Lawan ran for reelection in Yobe North Senatorial District on the ANPP platform and won with 92,799 votes, defeating Hassan Kafayos Hussaini of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) who got 76,960 votes. In 2019, he won reelection as a member of the APC.
